Having a great journey! Wish you were here. Of course, you are on your own journey. How is it going so far?

When people suggest my journey through the dark tunnel of total paralysis must have been a really tough challenge – they are right, it was. I also wonder where they might be paralyzed and don’t know it. You have heard me say this many times. If you want to do something but just can’t seem to do it, you are, in a very real sense paralyzed – and you need understanding and help, not criticism.

I had plenty of help as I overcame my physical paralysis. I had the focus and attention of a professional medical staff, dear friends, and a fiercely supportive husband to defend my right to live and help me get “un-paralyzed.” They didn’t criticize me; they helped me. Now I am here to help you, not criticize you; to understand and help defend your right to live –– really live –– and deal with the personal, financial or business paralysis that keeps you from moving to your next level of personal and professional accomplishment.

That is real paralysis, as real as it gets –– and it is as frustrating for you to deal with as it was for me when I lay in a hospital bed, unresponsive, unable to move even a finger.

Others with disabilities stay strong during hurricanes

Everyone is talking about Katrina and the impact on “regular folks.” It’s hard enough to imagine how the able-bodied could survive. But have you stopped to think about the effects on people with disabilities caught in the hurricane? Speaking colleague and disability activist Greg Smith, known as The Strength Coach, was one of those people. The hurricane forced him and his family from their home in Ocean Springs, Miss. Currently, Greg is living in a temporary home, an assisted living facility in Ohio. His three children, ages 8, 11 and 13, are staying with friends and attending school there.

Greg’s disability is muscular dystrophy and he weighs a mere 65 pounds. He relies on a power wheelchair and his specially adapted van. When his family evacuated, Greg headed north with his parents and the kids, leaving even their most important possessions at home.

As we all witnessed, Katrina was devastating. When Greg and his family returned they found their house was flooded with four feet of water, snakes and mud. Clothing, equipment, books, papers and his wheelchair were ruined. (The wheelchair company is replacing his chair so Greg will be able to move from place to place.)

For those of you wondering how you can help those with disabilities, check out the site: http://www.katrinadisability.info. It also includes those needing help and is listed with all the states.

Unfortunately, hurricane season has not come to an end. Rita followed soon in Katrina’s wake. Thank goodness the damage was slight in comparison.

Traveling into fall... It’s time to pull those winter coats out of my closet as I head back east to speak. Early October I’ll be in Rockville, Md., and then onto New Jersey to speak at the Critical Life Issues Conference. From there, it’s heading to Virginia for the Respect Life Conference and the annual diocesan youth rally at Bishop O’Connell High School.

Corporate America, health care professionals...Are you looking for a dynamic, inspirational speaker?

How about a breakout session that actually helps your company break-out of the paralysis you may not even realize is holding you back?

Give me 45 minutes with your convention audience and your company will never look at problems and challenges – or their solutions – the same way; I guarantee it.

Give my performance management team one breakout session with your corporate leadership and your productivity and profit will go up – measurably – and your legal liability and loss will drop – measurably!

What is the theme of your conference? What do you want your people to take home with them? Would you like me to inspire your corporation to a higher level of productivity and profit by overcoming the paralysis that keeps it where it is? Believe me, I will prove that anyone can move to the next level of productivity and profit by focusing on what they want (not on what they don’t) and what they can do (not on what they can't). Your Human Resources performance management system will never be the same – and neither will you.

Let's talk about it! Call me: 1-800-641-KATE (5283)

Fondly, Kate
