Hi! Having a great journey. Wish you were here.
No, I'm not on a vacation. A stroke isn't a journey of choice.
But it has been an amazing, soul-stirring, deep-down-in-the-gut-reaching adventure.
I'm Kate Adamson, author of the award-winning book, "Kate's Journey, Triumph over Adversity,"
which explores my journey back from the edge of death. Imagine this ... One day, you're an active,
vibrant, physically-fit woman starting a fitness-training business; a happy mother of two toddlers; living in a beautiful five-bedroom
home in an exclusive California neighborhood. The most difficult matter on your mind when you
go to bed is organizing tomorrow’s luncheon with your girlfriend.
The next morning you awake in intensive care, bewildered, frightened, fighting for your every
breath. You are completely paralyzed from a massive brain stem stroke, unable to do anything but
blink your eyes. You are screaming silently, helplessly; totally trapped in your body. No one
knows your prison. Few could even stand to think about what it would be like, much less
understand the struggle.
No, this is not the journey I had planned. But, oh what an adventure it has been – and still is. Because of this journey, I now
know who I am and what I stand for. I have found what is important and where I am going, and
life is wonderful.
I wouldn’t wish a brain stem stroke on anyone. But what I do want
for you is to realize the beauty of your own journey, and if it isn’t a vacation – at
least it is an adventure! Where are you on your journey? Let’s talk.

Strength in Numbers: On July 19, 2004, I shared the platform
with two other powerful speakers, Greg Smith and Sean Stevenson. We were at the National
Speakers Association 2004 Convention in Phoenix, Ariz., and doing a concurrent session.
I must admit, speaking in front of your peers is a tad
nerve-wrecking! Both Greg and Sean were born with their disabilities and mine came at 33. Three
totally different perspectives and yet all of us delivered compelling presentations that
illustrated the diversity of the human experience.
From this session I learned to find strength in numbers and to
connect with people who have a common bond. Know you don't have to be on this
journey alone ... there is always someone who has gone before you.
