About Kate Adamson

Kate Adamson, author of Paralyzed but not Powerless, tells her unique story of overcoming Locked in Syndrome (total paralysis from brain injury due to a brainstem stroke). She inspires corporate and government audiences to appreciate how those who effectively deal with their disabilities, tend to develop levels of creativity and resourcefulness beyond what they would have had they never suffered the disability. They take extraordinary approaches to ordinary problems – often achieving extraordinary results. Disabled people are forced to learn these lessons but all of us can choose to learn them. Kate shows you how to achieve your own extraordinary results.Her experience of overcoming personal paralysis directly relates to corporations dealing with paralysis brought on by the impact of global changes in their business, the economy, human resources issues, government regulations regarding accommodation, etc.

I’m going to introduce to you an extraordinary individual, Kate Adamson. She overcame amazing odds to achieve amazing results. What goals are you trying to reach? What keeps you from reaching them? Are you having trouble taking that first step? Do you feel paralyzed? Do you not know how to get started? Kate will show us how to overcome the paralysis that keeps us from moving to our next level of accomplishment as individuals and organizations.

Kate survived one-in-a-million odds overcoming total paralysis from a devastating double brainstem stroke. That stroke left her in a condition called “Locked in.” She was totally and completely paralyzed. She could not move a finger or a toe. She couldn’t swallow, talk, or move anything but her eyes. She could only communicate by blinking out signals. Kate could only think and blink. That is all she could do – but she could do that. With this, she began to create miracles. Not only did she survive but she used her spirit to overcome her illness and she learned how to accomplish more in the past few years than many accomplish in a lifetime.

Kate is a member of the USC Divison of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy Board of Counselors, and a board member of the Stroke Association of California. She has served as a national speaker for the American Heart Association, the American Stroke Association and the United Way and somehow found the time to write the award winning book; Paralyzed but not Powerless. Her amazing, inspirational story has been featured in numerous magazines, Redbook, Vim & Vigor, Caregiver, Keeping Well, The Female Patient, etc. She has been featured on local and national radio and television programs such as Larry King Live, The Bill O’Reilly Factor, The Abrams Report, Fox News, MSNBC, ABC and NBC.

Once unable to speak she now speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves.

As a tireless advocate for those less fortunate and abled she has spoken and lobbied for the United States Congress and countess state legislatures in order to obtain additional funding for research and to help craft laws to grant dignity to the sick and dying.
